How to connect a rain barrel to your gutter system
Materials you will Need:
- Rain Barrel with a spigot
- Downspout diverter kit
- Hacksaw or pipe cutter
- Drill with hole saw attachment
- Flexible house or tubing
- Measuring Tape
- Safety Gloves
Step by Step instructions:
1. Choose the right location
- Place your rain barrel on a level stable surface near a downspout. Elevate it using a sturdy platform or cinder blocks to improve water flow through the spigot.
- Ensure the barrel is easily accessible for connecting a hose or filling watering cans.
2. Prepare the Downspout
- Measure the height of your rain barrel relative to the downspout.
- Mark the downspout where you will install the diverter (just above the rain barrels top opening)
- Using a hacksaw or pipe cutter, carefully cut the downspout at the marked location.
3. Install the Diverter Kit
- Most downspout diverters come with a template to guide installation. Use the template to mark the hole location on the downspout
- Drill a hole using a hole saw attachment that matches the size of the diverter
- Insert the diverter into the downspout and secure it according to the manufacturer´s instructions.
- Connect the flexible hose from the diverter to the rain barrels inlet.
4. Secure the connections
- Ensure the hose is tightly connected to the rain barrel to prevent leaks. Use sealant around the connection points if needed.
- Check that the diverter is aligned to redirect water into the rain barrel during rainfall.
5. Test the system
- Run water through your gutter system to ensure the diverter channels rainwater into the barrel.
- Verify there are no leaks at the hose or diverter connections.
- Adjust the alignment if necessary to optimize water flow.
